Voulet–Chanoine Mission

1899 · 19th century

The Voulet–Chanoine Mission was a French military expedition of 1899 led by Captains Paul Voulet and Julien Chanoine, sent from French Sudan to conquer the territory towards Lake Chad. Its troops massacred villagers and burned settlements across what is now southern Niger, including Birni-N'Konni. When Lieutenant-Colonel Klobb was sent to take command, Voulet had him shot, and both leaders were then killed by their own soldiers in July 1899; the mission went on to take Zinder.
