Wadiyar dynasty

1399–1950 · 14th century · Also known as Wodeyar dynasty

The Wodeyar or Wadiyar dynasty ruled Mysore in southern India, by tradition from 1399 until after Indian independence. Vassals of Vijayanagara at first, they became independent after Raja Wodeyar I took Srirangapatna in 1610. Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan held real power from 1761, but the British restored the Wodeyars in 1799, and they ruled the princely state until 1950.
