Waitangi Tribunal
The Waitangi Tribunal is a permanent commission of inquiry in New Zealand, set up by the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975 to investigate claims by Māori that the Crown has breached the promises of the Treaty of Waitangi. From 1985 it could hear claims reaching back to 1840. Its reports, mostly recommendations, have underpinned large settlements between the Crown and iwi, including land, money and formal apologies.
