Waldheim affair

1986 · 20th century

The Waldheim affair was a controversy over the wartime past of Kurt Waldheim, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, during his successful campaign for the Austrian presidency in 1986. Revelations showed that he had concealed his service as a Wehrmacht officer in the Balkans, where war crimes were committed. A commission of historians found no proof of personal guilt but criticised his silence, and the affair pushed Austria to confront its role in Nazi crimes.
