Wang Yirong

1845–1900 · 19th century

Wang Yirong was a Chinese scholar-official of the Qing dynasty and head of the Imperial Academy. In 1899 he recognised that inscriptions on 'dragon bones' sold as medicine were an ancient script, and he began collecting them, leading to the discovery of the Shang oracle bones. He took his own life in 1900 when the foreign armies of the Eight-Nation Alliance entered Beijing.
