War of Jenkins' Ear

1739–1748 · 18th century

The War of Jenkins' Ear was a conflict between Great Britain and Spain fought mainly in the Caribbean and on the American mainland from 1739. It took its name from the ear of Robert Jenkins, a British captain mutilated by Spanish coastguards in 1731. After a British failure at Cartagena de Indias in 1741, it merged into the wider War of the Austrian Succession and ended with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748.
