War of the Limburg Succession

1283–1289 · 13th century

The War of the Limburg Succession was fought from 1283 to 1289 over the Duchy of Limburg after the death of Duchess Ermengard in 1283. Duke John I of Brabant, who had bought the claim of her kinsman Adolf of Berg, faced Count Reinald I of Guelders, Ermengard's widower, backed by Archbishop Siegfried of Westerburg of Cologne and the count of Luxembourg. John's victory at the Battle of Worringen in 1288 won Limburg for Brabant.
