Wat Chaiwatthanaram

1630 · 17th century

Wat Chaiwatthanaram is a Buddhist temple on the Chao Phraya river just outside the island of Ayutthaya, built from 1630 by King Prasat Thong. Its central prang and surrounding towers, modelled on Khmer temple plans, represent Mount Meru and the Buddhist cosmos. Ruined by the Burmese in 1767, it is part of the Historic City of Ayutthaya World Heritage Site.
