William Blake

1757–1827 · 19th century

William Blake was an English poet, painter and engraver, now regarded as one of the great figures of Romanticism. Largely unrecognised in his lifetime, he combined text and image in his own illuminated books, including Songs of Innocence and of Experience. As a commercial engraver he made several plates for John Gabriel Stedman's Narrative of Suriname (1796), whose images of slavery became widely known.
