William I, Duke of Aquitaine

875–918 · 10th century · Also known as William the Pious

William the Pious was count of Auvergne and, from 893, duke of Aquitaine, one of the greatest nobles of the late Carolingian kingdom. In 910 he founded the abbey of Cluny in Burgundy, freeing it from lay control and placing it under the pope, and it became the centre of a major movement of monastic reform.
