Wolter von Plettenberg

c. 1450–1535 · 16th century

Wolter von Plettenberg was Master of the Livonian Order from 1494 to 1535 and the leading figure of the Livonian Confederation. His victory over Muscovite forces at Smolino in 1502 secured half a century of peace on the eastern frontier. He tolerated the Lutheran Reformation in Riga and the other towns while keeping the Order Catholic, and he is often regarded as the Order's most capable master.
