Fat Margaret

c. 1511–1530 · 16th century · Also known as Paks Margareeta

Fat Margaret is a massive round artillery tower guarding the Great Coastal Gate at the northern end of the old town of Tallinn (Reval). Built in the early 16th century, it is about 25 metres across, with walls up to about 5 metres thick, designed both to defend the harbour approach and to impress arriving ships. It now houses the Estonian Maritime Museum.
