Yanagawa affair

1635 · 17th century · Also known as Yanagawa ikken

The Yanagawa affair was a dispute in Japan in the 1630s. Yanagawa Shigeoki, a senior retainer of the Sō lords of Tsushima, revealed that the Sō had forged and altered diplomatic letters exchanged between the Tokugawa shoguns and the kings of Joseon Korea in order to restore relations after Hideyoshi's invasions. In 1635 the shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu ruled in favour of the Sō, exiled Yanagawa and left Korean relations in their hands.
