Tokugawa Iemitsu

1604–1651 · 17th century

Tokugawa Iemitsu was the third Tokugawa shogun of Japan, ruling from 1623 to 1651. He completed the shogunate's system of control, making alternate attendance of the daimyo in Edo compulsory, suppressing the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637–38 and restricting foreign trade to the Dutch and Chinese at Nagasaki. In 1643 he gave the domain of Aizu to his half-brother Hoshina Masayuki.
