Matsudaira Katamori

1836–1893 · 19th century

Matsudaira Katamori was the last lord of the Aizu domain. In 1862 he became Protector of Kyoto, policing the capital with the Shinsengumi and supporting the shogunate against Choshu radicals. Branded an enemy of the court after the Meiji Restoration, Aizu was besieged and defeated in 1868 during the Boshin War. He later served as chief priest of the Nikko Toshogu shrine.
