Yazid I

646–683 CE · 7th century · Also known as Yazid

Yazid I was the second Umayyad caliph, reigning from 680 to 683, the son of Muawiya. His succession was contested, and his reign saw the killing of Husayn ibn Ali at Karbala in 680 and the revolt of Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr. Accounts of the Umayyad Caliphate treat these events, which shaped the division between Sunni and Shia Islam, in its account of the dynasty's early years.
