Zafiraminia
The Zafiraminia were a ruling clan of south-eastern Madagascar who claimed descent from Muslim immigrants, traditionally from Arabia. From around 1500 they formed the aristocracy of the Antanosy, keeping Arabic-script writing (sorabe) and ritual privileges such as the exclusive right to slaughter cattle. Related clans spread to other parts of the island and may have influenced the rise of later Malagasy kingdoms.
