Zalesye
Zalesye ('the land beyond the woods') is the historical name of the north-eastern Rus' lands between the upper Volga and the Oka, centred on Rostov, Suzdal and Vladimir, which from the viewpoint of Kiev lay beyond the great forests. The region formed the core of Vladimir-Suzdal and later of Muscovy, and the name survives in towns such as Pereslavl-Zalessky.
