Zou Yan

c. 305–240 BCE · 3rd century BCE

Zou Yan was a Chinese philosopher of the Warring States period associated with the Jixia Academy in Qi. He is regarded as the founder of the Yin-Yang school, combining the theory of yin and yang with the cycle of the Five Phases, which he used to explain the rise and fall of dynasties. His cosmology strongly influenced Han dynasty thought, though his writings are lost.
