Barwani State

1650 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Barwani

A Sisodia Rajput state on the Narmada in Nimar, one of the salute states of the Central India Agency.

Origins

The rulers of Barwani claimed descent from the Sisodia house of Mewar and held lands in the Narmada valley for centuries. The register dates the state to 1650, when the capital was established at Barwani. Its territory had shrunk under Maratha pressure by the 18th century.

Rule and society

The Ranas ruled the south bank of the Narmada and the Satpura hills, home to many Bhils. Under British paramountcy it was an eleven-gun salute state in the Bhopawar Agency, with an economy based on cotton and grain. Little is recorded of its rulers beyond these lists.

Decline and legacy

Barwani joined Madhya Bharat in 1948 and Madhya Pradesh in 1956. It is now a district headquarters.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
