Caleti

300 BCE – 57 BCE (approx.)

Belgic people of the chalk coast of upper Normandy who gave their name to the Pays de Caux.

Origins

The Caleti lived on the plateau between the lower Seine and the Channel cliffs. Caesar reports that they promised ten thousand warriors to the Belgic league of 57 BCE.

Rule and society

Nothing is known of their rulers or institutions. Their coast and the Seine estuary gave them a part in cross-Channel trade.

Decline and legacy

They submitted in 57 BCE but sent men to Alesia in 52 BCE and joined the Bellovaci in 51 BCE. Under Rome their chief town was Juliobona (Lillebonne), whose theatre survives, and the region kept their name as the Pays de Caux.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
