Canton of Málaga

1873 CE – 1873 CE · capital Málaga

A federalist canton proclaimed in Málaga during the Cantonal Rebellion of 1873, one of the last in Andalusia to dissolve.

Origins

In July 1873 the federal republicans of Málaga, a city with a strong radical movement, declared it a sovereign canton, joining the wave of cantonal risings against the central government of the Spanish First Republic.

Rule and society

Local federalists ran the city through a cantonal committee and volunteer militias. The canton avoided open battle with the government and was torn by quarrels among its own factions over how far to break with Madrid.

Decline and legacy

As the government regained control of Andalusia after General Pavía's campaign against the Canton of Seville and the Canton of Cádiz, the Málaga canton dissolved without a major fight in the late summer of 1873.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
