Chhota Udaipur State

1743 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Chhota Udaipur

A Chauhan Rajput state of eastern Gujarat whose rulers traced their line to the medieval kings of Pavagadh and Champaner.

Origins

When Sultan Mahmud Begada of Gujarat took Champaner in 1484, members of the Khichi Chauhan ruling family fled east and founded the states of Chhota Udaipur and Baria. Chhota Udaipur emerged as a separate state around 1743.

Rule and society

The state lay in forested hill country with a largely Adivasi population of Rathwa, Bhil and other communities. It paid tribute to the Gaekwads of Baroda State and later belonged to the Rewa Kantha Agency, ruled by a Maharawal. Timber and forest produce were important; the Rathwa Pithora paintings come from this area.

Decline and legacy

After accession to India, Chhota Udaipur was merged into Bombay State in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960, now as Chhota Udaipur district.
