Da Yining

929 CE – 937 CE · capital Yangjumie

The short dynasty of Yang Ganzhen in western Yunnan, overthrown in 937 by Duan Siping, founder of the Dali Kingdom.

Origins

Yang Ganzhen, a leading official of the Erhai region who had brought down Da Changhe in 928 and installed Da Tianxing, deposed his own puppet Zhao Shanzheng in 929 and proclaimed the kingdom of Da Yining at Yangjumie.

Rule and society

Sources are scanty. Later accounts describe Yang Ganzhen's rule as oppressive and his government as unstable, alienating both the Bai nobility and the many tribal peoples of eastern Yunnan.

Decline and legacy

In 937 Duan Siping, a military commander of the Tonghai region, allied with eastern tribes, marched on the capital and overthrew Yang Ganzhen. He founded the Dali Kingdom, which lasted until the Mongol conquest.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
