Yining
Yining, known in Uyghur as Ghulja, is a city in the Ili valley of north-western Xinjiang, China, near the border with Kazakhstan. In the Qing period it was a trading town of the Ili region, which Russia occupied from 1871 to 1881. In November 1944 rebels took the city and proclaimed the Second East Turkestan Republic there, and in 1997 it was the scene of protests suppressed by the authorities.
