Datarpur State

1550 CE – 1818 CE (approx.) · capital Datarpur

A small Rajput hill principality in the Shivalik foothills of the Punjab, swallowed by Ranjit Singh's Sikh Empire in 1818.

Origins

Datarpur was one of the petty Rajput states of the outer Himalayan hills between the Beas and Sutlej, in what is now Hoshiarpur district. Its ruling family belonged to the Dadwal clan and traced kinship to neighbouring hill houses such as those of Kangra and Guler.

Rule and society

Little is recorded of its internal history. Like its neighbours it was a small chieftaincy of hill villages and forts, paying tribute in turn to the Mughals, to Raja Sansar Chand of Kangra and then to the Sikhs as their power grew in the late 18th century.

Decline and legacy

In 1818 Maharaja Ranjit Singh annexed Datarpur to the Sikh Empire, leaving the family a jagir. The area passed to the British with the Jalandhar Doab in 1846.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
