Dhami State

1500 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Halog

A small Rajput hill state near Shimla, remembered for the Dhami firing of 1939, when its ruler's forces fired on protesters of the Praja Mandal.

Origins

Tradition dates the ruling family to around 1500, but little is reliably known of its origins. Its seat was at Halog.

Rule and society

Dhami was a small hill state, occupied by the Gurkhas in the early 19th century and restored under British protection after 1815. In July 1939 a march by the Dhami Prem Pracharini Sabha and Praja Mandal activists demanding reforms was fired on near Halog, killing protesters, an event remembered in the movement for democratic rule in the hill states.

Decline and legacy

Dhami merged into Himachal Pradesh in April 1948 and is now part of Shimla district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
