Dholpur State

1806 CE – 1948 CE · capital Dholpur

A Jat-ruled state on the Chambal, created in 1806 when the British gave Dholpur to the Rana of Gohad.

Origins

The Jat Ranas of Gohad had held lands near Gwalior in the 18th century. In 1806 the British returned Gohad and Gwalior to the Scindias and compensated Rana Kirat Singh with Dholpur, Bari and Rajakhera on the Chambal river.

Rule and society

Dholpur was a 15-gun salute state of the Rajputana Agency, ruled by a Maharaj Rana over a population of farmers in the ravine country of the Chambal. Its red sandstone quarries supplied building stone across northern India. Udaybhan Singh, who ruled from 1911, was the last Maharaj Rana.

Decline and legacy

Udaybhan Singh acceded to India, and in 1948 Dholpur joined the Matsya Union, which merged into the United State of Rajasthan in 1949. It is now a district of Rajasthan.
