Duchy of Glad

890 CE – 934 CE (approx.) · capital Keve

Duchy in the Banat described in the Gesta Hungarorum as resisting the conquering Hungarians around 900; its existence is debated.

Origins

The main source is the Gesta Hungarorum, written by an anonymous notary around 1200. It says Glad, who came from Vidin, ruled the land between the Mureș, the Tisza and the Danube, with Cumans, Bulgarians and Vlachs, from the fortress of Keve (Kovin).

Rule and society

Nothing is known of its government beyond the Gesta, which claims Glad fought the Hungarians with Cuman, Bulgarian and Vlach forces before being defeated and submitting. Historians disagree on whether he was a real ruler, perhaps a Bulgarian governor, or a figure invented from later place-names.

Decline and legacy

The Gesta says the Hungarians took his lands, which then passed to the Principality of Hungary. The same source makes Ahtum, of the Duchy of Ahtum, his descendant.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
