Duchy of Ahtum

990 CE – 1028 CE (approx.) · capital Morisena

Realm in the Banat ruled from Morisena by Ahtum (Ajtony), a powerful Orthodox lord defeated by Stephen I of Hungary.

Origins

Ahtum is known from the Legend of Saint Gerard. Around 1000 he held the land between the Mureș, the Tisza and the Danube, ruling from Morisena (Cenad). He had been baptised by the Orthodox rite at Vidin, and the Gesta Hungarorum makes him a descendant of Glad of the Duchy of Glad.

Rule and society

Ahtum was rich in horses and cattle and taxed the salt carried down the Mureș to the king of Hungary, which provoked conflict. He founded a Greek monastery at Morisena, staffed by Byzantine monks, and recognised Byzantine authority.

Decline and legacy

Stephen I sent his commander Csanád, who defeated and killed Ahtum. Historians date this either to around 1003 or to around 1028. Csanád became count of the region, renamed Csanád, and Gerard founded a Latin bishopric there, part of the Kingdom of Hungary (1000-1301).

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
