Free Imperial City of Augsburg

1276 CE – 1806 CE · capital Augsburg

Swabian imperial city of the Fugger and Welser bankers, where the Augsburg Confession was read in 1530 and the Peace of Augsburg made in 1555.

Origins

Augsburg grew from the Roman provincial capital of Augusta Vindelicorum and was ruled for centuries by its bishops. Its citizens won increasing self-government, and in 1276 King Rudolf I confirmed their town law, making Augsburg an imperial city independent of the Prince-Bishopric of Augsburg.

Rule and society

A council of patricians and guilds governed after the guild revolution of 1368. Textile production and banking made Augsburg one of Europe's richest cities; the Fuggers financed emperors and founded the Fuggerei social housing in 1516. The Augsburg Confession was presented at the diet of 1530, and the Peace of Augsburg of 1555 recognised Lutheranism. After 1648 Catholics and Protestants shared offices equally.

Decline and legacy

Augsburg lost its freedom in 1806 when it was annexed by the Kingdom of Bavaria. It remains a major Bavarian city, and the Peace Festival of 8 August, held since 1650, is still a local holiday.
