Peace of Augsburg
The Peace of Augsburg was a settlement agreed in 1555 between Emperor Charles V's government and the Lutheran princes of the Holy Roman Empire. It established the principle that a territorial ruler could determine the religion of his domain, either Catholic or Lutheran. It ended a period of religious war but left a fragmented confessional map in the empire.
