Free State of Icaria

1912 CE – 1912 CE · capital Agios Kirykos

Tiny independent republic declared on the Aegean island of Icaria in 1912 after islanders expelled the Ottoman garrison, lasting months until union with Greece.

Origins

Icaria, a mountainous island west of Samos, was under Ottoman rule when Italy's war with the Ottoman Empire weakened Turkish control in the Aegean. On 17 July 1912 the islanders, led by the doctor Ioannis Malachias, rose against the small Ottoman garrison, forced its surrender and proclaimed the Free State of Icaria.

Rule and society

The new state set up a provisional government at Agios Kirykos, adopted its own flag and issued postage stamps. It lacked money, an army and any outside recognition, and the islanders, who lived by farming, herding and emigration, hoped for annexation by Greece rather than lasting independence.

Decline and legacy

When the First Balkan War began, the Greek navy arrived in November 1912 and the island joined the Kingdom of Greece. The episode lasted about five months and is still commemorated on Icaria every July.
