Idar State

1728 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Himmatnagar

A Rathore Rajput state in the hills of north-eastern Gujarat, ruled by a branch of the Jodhpur royal house.

Origins

Idar had an older line of Rao chiefs, but in 1728 Anand Singh and Rai Singh, brothers of Maharaja Abhai Singh of Jodhpur, took the fortress with Mughal sanction and founded a new Rathore dynasty. Maratha pressure soon forced it to pay tribute to the Gaekwads of Baroda State.

Rule and society

Idar was the leading state of the Mahi Kantha Agency, governed by a Maharaja over hilly, partly tribal country. Its most famous ruler was Sir Pratap Singh of Jodhpur, the soldier and friend of the British royal family, who held Idar from 1902 to 1911. The town of Ahmednagar, which became the capital, was later renamed Himmatnagar after Maharaja Himmat Singh (ruled 1931–49).

Decline and legacy

Idar acceded to India and in 1948 was merged into Bombay State; since 1960 its lands, centred on Himmatnagar, are in Sabarkantha district of Gujarat.
