Ilergetes

500 BCE – 205 BCE (approx.) · capital Iltirta

The leading Iberian people of the Lleida plain, whose chiefs Indibilis and Mandonius switched between Carthage and Rome in the Second Punic War.

Origins

The Ilergetes occupied the plains of the Segre and Cinca rivers around modern Lleida from the 5th century BCE, with their capital at Iltirta. By the late 3rd century BCE they were among the most powerful peoples of north-eastern Iberia.

Rule and society

They were ruled by princes who could raise large armies and dominate neighbouring peoples. Their economy rested on the cereal plains of the Segre, and Iltirta minted coins with an Iberian legend. During the Second Punic War their leaders Indibilis and Mandonius first served Carthage, then joined Scipio in 209 BCE.

Decline and legacy

In 206 and 205 BCE the brothers revolted against Rome; Indibilis died in battle and Mandonius was handed over and executed. The Ilergetes were absorbed into Hispania Citerior, and Iltirta became Roman Ilerda, where Caesar defeated Pompey's legates in 49 BCE.
