Karamanli Tripoli

1711 CE – 1835 CE · capital Tripoli

The hereditary Karamanli pashas of Tripoli, a corsair dynasty best known for fighting the United States in the First Barbary War.

Origins

In 1711 Ahmed Karamanli, a cavalry officer of mixed Turkish and local descent, seized power in Tripoli, massacred his Janissary rivals and founded a dynasty. The Ottoman sultan recognised him as pasha, and Ottoman Tripolitania became a hereditary, largely autonomous state.

Rule and society

The Karamanli pashas lived from corsairing, tribute from European powers and the trans-Saharan trade through the Fezzan, which Yusuf Karamanli annexed in 1812. Yusuf, who ruled from 1795, declared war on the United States in 1801; the frigate Philadelphia was captured, and American forces took Derna in 1805 before a peace treaty.

Decline and legacy

After European pressure ended corsairing and tribute, debts mounted and civil war broke out in 1832. In 1835 the Ottomans sent a fleet, deposed the last Karamanli and restored direct rule as the Tripolitania Vilayet.
