Kingdom of the Hwicce

577 CE – 780 CE (approx.) · capital Worcester

An Anglo-Saxon sub-kingdom of the lower Severn valley around Worcester, ruled by its own kings under Mercian overlordship.

Origins

The Hwicce took shape in Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and western Warwickshire after the West Saxon victory at Dyrham in 577 opened the region to English settlement. By the 7th century the area was ruled by a local dynasty, possibly installed or confirmed by Penda of the Kingdom of Mercia.

Rule and society

Hwiccan kings such as Osric and Oshere endowed early minsters, Osric being credited with founding those at Bath and Gloucester, and a bishopric was created at Worcester around 680 to serve the people. The territory was rich in salt from Droitwich and in farmland, and its charters are among the earliest English documents.

Decline and legacy

Hwiccan rulers were downgraded from kings to ealdormen in the late 8th century under Offa. The kingdom's boundaries survived as the medieval diocese of Worcester, preserving its outline for centuries.
