Battle of Dyrham

577 · 6th century · Also known as Battle of Deorham

The Battle of Deorham was fought in 577 at Dyrham, north of Bath in Gloucestershire. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the West Saxon leaders Ceawlin and Cuthwine killed three British kings and took the towns of Gloucester, Cirencester and Bath. The victory cut the Britons of the south-west off from those of Wales and opened the lower Severn valley to English settlement.
