Kuban Soviet Republic
Origins
In March 1918 Red forces took Yekaterinodar from the Kuban Rada, the Cossack regional government, which fled. The Bolsheviks proclaimed the Kuban Soviet Republic in April 1918 as an autonomous part of the Russian SFSR, governing the Kuban region and its large Cossack and non-Cossack peasant population.
Rule and society
The republic was run by a council of commissars and relied on Red Guard units and non-Cossack settlers, who resented Cossack privileges in land. It repelled Kornilov's Volunteer Army at Yekaterinodar in April 1918, where Kornilov was killed. Grain requisitioning and conflict with the Cossacks undermined its support.
Decline and legacy
In May 1918 it merged with the Black Sea Soviet Republic to form the Kuban-Black Sea Soviet Republic, which the Whites overran later that year. Yekaterinodar fell to the Volunteer Army in August 1918.
Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
