Black Sea Soviet Republic

1918 CE – 1918 CE · capital Novorossiysk

A short-lived Soviet republic of 1918 on the Black Sea coast around Novorossiysk, soon merged into the Kuban-Black Sea Soviet Republic.

Origins

In March 1918 the Bolsheviks of Black Sea Governorate, a narrow coastal province including Novorossiysk, Tuapse and Sochi, proclaimed the Black Sea Soviet Republic as an autonomous part of the Russian SFSR during the early months of the Civil War.

Rule and society

The republic was run by a council of commissars at Novorossiysk, relying on sailors of the Black Sea Fleet and local Red Guards. It struggled with food shortages and with anti-Bolshevik forces. Little is known of its administration.

Decline and legacy

After about two months, in May 1918, it was merged with the Kuban Soviet Republic to form the Kuban-Black Sea Soviet Republic. The coast passed to the Whites later in 1918, and Soviet rule returned only in 1920.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
