Loharu State

1806 CE – 1947 CE · capital Loharu

A small Muslim-ruled state on the edge of the Thar, granted in 1806 to the family into which the poet Ghalib married.

Origins

Ahmad Bakhsh Khan, an agent who helped negotiate between the British and the ruler of Alwar State during the war of 1803, received Loharu from Alwar and Firozpur Jhirka from the British in 1806 as a reward.

Rule and society

His son Shamsuddin Ahmad Khan was hanged in 1835 for arranging the murder of William Fraser, the British Resident at Delhi, and Firozpur Jhirka was confiscated, leaving the family only Loharu. The Nawabs ruled a small dry territory with a mostly Hindu peasantry. The poet Mirza Ghalib married into the family and was closely tied to its Delhi household.

Decline and legacy

Loharu acceded to India in 1947 and was merged into East Punjab; it is now in Bhiwani district of Haryana.
