Manapii

100 CE – 200 CE (approx.)

People of south-east Ireland named by Ptolemy, with a town called Manapia, sharing their name with the Menapii of the Low Countries.

Origins

Ptolemy's Geography of about 150 places the Manapii on the east coast of Ireland, south of the Cauci, usually located around Wicklow or north Wexford, with a settlement named Manapia. Their name matches the Menapii of Belgic Gaul, which has led to suggestions of migration or trading links across the sea.

Rule and society

Nothing is known of their rulers or society. Some scholars connect them with later Irish population names such as the Monaig, recorded in Leinster and Ulster, and with the Fir Manach who gave their name to Fermanagh, but these links rest only on the similarity of names.

Decline and legacy

The Manapii do not appear in later records. Their part of the coast later lay within the Kingdom of Leinster, and especially the lands of the Ui Chennselaig.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
