Mohanpur State

1600 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Mohanpur

A minor chiefship of the Mahi Kantha country in northern Gujarat, one of dozens of small Rajput holdings under British protection.

Origins

Mohanpur was one of the many petty estates of the Mahi Kantha region, held by a Rajput family whose origins are recorded mainly in local tradition. It emerged as a separate holding by around 1600.

Rule and society

The Thakor ruled a handful of villages, paying tribute to the Gaekwads of Baroda and, after the early 19th century settlements, coming under the supervision of the Mahi Kantha Agency. Few details of its rulers or internal affairs appear in standard references.

Decline and legacy

In 1948 Mohanpur was merged into Bombay Province, and its villages became part of Sabarkantha district in Gujarat in 1960.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
