Muflihi Sheikhdom

1800 CE – 1967 CE (approx.) · capital Al Jurba

A small tribal sheikhdom of the Aden hinterland, among the last to join the Federation of South Arabia.

Origins

The Muflihi sheikhdom, with its seat at Al Jurba, lay in the highlands near the Yafa sultanates north-east of Aden. It emerged as a distinct tribal polity around 1800. Its history before British contact is almost unrecorded.

Rule and society

The sheikhs ruled a small farming and herding population by tribal custom. The territory became part of the Aden Protectorate through treaties with Britain and joined the Federation of South Arabia in the mid-1960s.

Decline and legacy

After the National Liberation Front took power in 1967, the sheikhdom was abolished and incorporated into South Yemen.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
