Oxybii

300 BCE – 154 BCE (approx.)

Ligurian people of the coast near Fréjus who, with the Deciates, provoked Rome's first intervention beyond the Alps in 154 BCE.

Origins

Known chiefly from Polybius, the Oxybii lived on the coast west of Antibes, near the port of Aegitna, probably around modern Mandelieu or Cannes.

Rule and society

Nothing is recorded of their rulers. Polybius tells that they attacked Roman envoys landing at Aegitna and wounded one of them.

Decline and legacy

In 154 BCE the consul Quintus Opimius marched against them, took Aegitna and defeated them and the Deciates. Their land was given to Massalia and later absorbed into Gallia Narbonensis, where the Roman colony of Forum Julii (Fréjus) was founded nearby.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
