Pratiharas of Mandavyapura
Origins
According to inscriptions set up by its kings Bauka in 837 and Kakkuka in 861, the dynasty was founded by Harichandra, a Brahmin who had one Brahmin and one Kshatriya wife; the sons of the latter founded the ruling line. They established themselves at Mandavyapura, modern Mandore near Jodhpur, in the 6th century.
Rule and society
The family ruled a small kingdom in Marwar, at first independently and later as feudatories of the more powerful Gurjara-Pratihara of Kannauj. Kakkuka's Ghatiyala inscriptions describe him founding markets and settling merchants, and praise his skill in arms and Sanskrit learning. The family's history illustrates the emergence of the Rajput clans.
Decline and legacy
The Mandore Pratiharas disappear from the record after the late 9th century. Mandore later passed to other Rajput clans, and around 1400 the Rathores made it their capital before founding Jodhpur in 1459.
