Principality of Bryansk

1246 CE – 1356 CE (approx.) · capital Bryansk

A forest principality on the Desna that inherited the senior role in the Chernigov lands after the Mongol sack, before falling to Lithuania.

Origins

Bryansk on the Desna was a town of the Principality of Chernigov. After the Mongols destroyed Chernigov in 1239 and Prince Mikhail was killed in 1246, his son Roman Mikhailovich made Bryansk his seat, and it became the leading principality of the old Chernigov lands.

Rule and society

Protected by thick forests, Bryansk recovered more quickly than the open lands to the south. Roman Mikhailovich, who ruled until the 1280s, fought off Lithuanian raids and allied by marriage with the princes of Galicia-Volhynia. From the early 14th century princes of the Smolensk line held the town, and it was torn by disputes between pro-Lithuanian and pro-Horde factions.

Decline and legacy

Around 1356 Algirdas of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania took Bryansk and later gave it to his son Dmitry. It remained Lithuanian until the Grand Duchy of Moscow took it in 1500.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
