Principality of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst

1744 CE – 1806 CE · capital Schillingsfürst

Franconian principality of a Catholic Hohenlohe branch, whose family later produced a German chancellor.

Origins

The Hohenlohe family ruled lands in north-eastern Württemberg and western Franconia from the Middle Ages and divided into many lines. The Catholic Waldenburg branch included Schillingsfürst, on a hill near Rothenburg, and in 1744 its head was raised to the rank of prince of the Empire.

Rule and society

The principality was small, Catholic and rural, governed from a baroque palace at Schillingsfürst, which still houses a falconry. It belonged to the Franconian Circle and shared the Hohenlohe family's collective vote. Its princes served the emperors in court and army posts.

Decline and legacy

In 1806 the principality was mediatised and placed under the Kingdom of Bavaria. The family remained prominent: Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst was Bavarian prime minister and German chancellor from 1894 to 1900.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
