Rajauri State

1194 CE – 1846 CE (approx.) · capital Rajauri

A hill state on the road from the Punjab to Kashmir, known as Rajapuri in Kashmiri chronicles and ruled in later centuries by Muslim Jarral Rajas.

Origins

Rajapuri appears in Kalhana's Rajatarangini as a hill kingdom bordering Kashmir. Tradition holds that the Jarral dynasty, Rajputs who became Muslim, took power around 1194.

Rule and society

Rajauri controlled a stage on the Mughal road over the Pir Panjal to Kashmir, which the emperors used on their journeys to the valley; Mughal gardens and inns survive along it. In the early 19th century Raja Agar Khan dealt with and fought against the Sikh Empire during Ranjit Singh's Kashmir campaigns.

Decline and legacy

Rajauri fell under Sikh control and then to Gulab Singh of Jammu, and in 1846 it became part of Jammu and Kashmir (princely state). It is now a district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
