Sailana State

1736 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Sailana

A Rathore Rajput state of western Malwa, an offshoot of Ratlam, later known for its rulers' cactus garden and celebrated cookery.

Origins

Sailana was founded in 1736 by Jai Singh, a younger member of the Rathore ruling house of Ratlam, who received his own share of territory in the hills west of Ratlam. The family descended from the Rathores of Jodhpur.

Rule and society

The state paid tribute to the Scindias of Gwalior State and later came under British protection within the Malwa Agency of central India, with an 11-gun salute. A Raja governed a small, partly tribal hill territory. In the 20th century the rulers became known for a large cactus garden and for the family's recipes, later published as a well-known cookbook.

Decline and legacy

After accession to India, Sailana merged into Madhya Bharat in 1948 and became part of Madhya Pradesh in 1956; it now lies in Ratlam district.
